Two Left Buffers is the ninth episode of Season 2 of Thomas: The Trainz Adventures and the nineteenth episode overall.

Plot[]

On the Island of Sodor, you will find many different branch lines: the Ffarquhar, Little Western and the Harwick branch among many others. With summer approaching, the workload begins to pick up on the Harwick branch, with tourists and locals flocking to the beaches or to the Mainland. But with Daisy unable to take goods, Ryan and Skiff are the only ones able to tackle the workload. The Fat Controller decides to bring in a new engine to help out.

One day at Ryan’s shed, he informs him of his intentions and begins to worry a bit before the engine arrives, introducing himself as Gilbert. He eagerly greets everyone, and the Fat Controller assigns him to take some trucks to Arlesdale. As the Fat Controller and the two engines depart, Gilbert couples up to some trucks he believes is headed to Arlesdale.

As he enters Arlesburgh, he becomes fascinated by the sites, and narrowly avoids an accident with Skiff. The two exchange pleasantries before Gilbert departs after Skiff clears the line for him.

After leaving Arlesburgh behind, Gilbert decides to speed up as the line is clear. However, along the way, the trucks begin to bump him. He breaks and stops, but so hard that the trucks derail. Realising he’s stuck, Gilbert calls out for help. Just then, Harvey arrives and helps re-rail the trucks. He advises Gilbert not to go too fast and focus on getting to the destination. Gilbert takes note of the advice and continues the trip.

At Arlesdale, he meets Oliver, who immediately takes note of the smelly trucks. Gilbert eventually also realises this and says he can get the coal trucks. Just then, Ryan arrives with them and notes that Gilbert must have taken the wrong ones when the coal trucks where still in the yard. The right trucks are exchanged, and Ryan takes the fish trucks to the docks, with Gilbert tagging along.

The two start to chat and get to know each other more that night in the sheds, much to Daisy’s annoyance, who isn’t getting much sleep.

The next morning, Gilbert takes some trucks. After Douglas passes at a merged track, the trucks push and bump Gilbert all the way into Arlesburgh. The wind he causes blows Skiff into the sea. After Arlesburgh, Duck is assisting some workmen with mending the tracks. He backs away and the workmen jump clear as Gilbert arrives and derails. He comes to rest at the edge, overlooking the ocean.

As Gilbert is inspected in the sheds, Ryan arrives to check on him. Gilbert says that he is accident prone, and that he caused accidents frequently on his old line. The accidents became so severe that the manager sent him to the scrapyard, deeming him dangerous. As time went on, the Fat Controller eventually arrives to purchase him, in need of an engine to help on the Harwick branch. Ryan suggests that Gilbert is too worried about causing accidents, which might lead to them happening. Gilbert acknowledges this just as a workman arrives to inform of Daisy having a breakdown. He asks one of them to help her. Ryan suggests Gilbert should do it, although doubtful, he accepts to do.

Gilbert retrieves Daisy and begins the journey back to Arlesburgh Harbour. But halfway through their journey, Gilbert begins to doubt himself and stops. Ryan passes by with some trucks and encourages him on. Gilbert regains confidence and continues the journey.

Upon arriving, he is greeted by Duck, Skiff and the Fat Controller. He praises his work and calls him a Really Useful Engine.

That night at the sheds, Gilbert thanks Ryan for encouraging him on. As they fall asleep, he finally feels right at home with his new friends on the Island of Sodor.
