The Blistering Cold is the fourth episode of Season 2 of Thomas: The Trainz Adventures and the fourteenth episode overall.

Plot[]

The Small Controller arrives one morning to assign the tasks of the day, and asks Rex to shunt in the yards, as it's in quite a mess. Bert teases him about it before departing.

As Rex is shunting in the yards, he notices the Small Controller looking expectantly towards the tracks into the station. Shortly after, two twin diesels arrive. The Small Controller calls Rex over and introduces him to the twins, who go by the Blisters, or Blister 1 and 2 respectively. Jock arrives with a passenger train and questions why they have their names, which the twins question him about in return about his name. Jock explains his name's origins and how Douglas suggested it when he was first built. The twins in return explain how their names stem from their engine and how it was constructed. After departing, the Small Controller asks Rex to show the twins the ropes with shunting. The twins enjoy shunting and they have some fun together with Rex. As tea time comes around, Rex takes them to the sheds to meet the other engines.

However, as they arrive at the sheds, Rex suddenly realises that there isn't room for them. None of the other engines know where the twins should be sleeping, so Rex decides to ask the Small Controller. He explains that a new shed will be constructed for them, but it will take some time for the parts to arrive. The twins and Rex thank the controller. The twins then mention how they were mistreated on their old railway and how the Arlesdale Railway is already a strong improvement. The Small Controller assures them that all engines will be treated well on his railway, and tells them to sleep at the sheds at Ffarquhar Road for the night. He also warns of an incoming snow storm.

The storm takes over the island that night and settles by morning. Rex begins to worry how the Blisters are holding up. The Small Controller tasks Mike with taking some ballast trucks from Ffarquhar Road, where the twins are stationed.

Once Mike arrives there, he finds the Blisters having fun with the ballast trucks. Being in a bad mood, he orders them to sort out his train and stop fooling around. The Blisters shunt his train and Mike sets off. He starts to pick up speed, worrying that he is late, but is driver insits that they aren't. Despite this, Mike asks him to increase his speed in order to break through a snow drift ahead. However, the drift turns out to be larger then he expected, and the driver applies the breaks. However, it's too late, and Mike goes off the rails and down a hill and comes to rest at the end of a pier. Panicked, he begins to whistle. His whistling is heard by the Blisters, who rush to his aid.

One of them stays with Mike as the other fetches the breakdown train. Butch arrives and tows Mike away from the pier and onto a flatbed. The Small Controller arrives and questions Mike about the accident. He recaps the events for him, and the Small Controller advises him to do jobs safley and to not rush things in the future, which Mike accepts. Butch brings Mike back to Arlesdale, where he is placed on a standard gauge flatbed and taken to Crovan's Gate by Ryan, where he is placed beside Rheneas. He encourages Mike to tell him what happened, as they have the time for it.

Some time later, Douglas brings a repaired Mike back to Arlesdale, along with the parts for the Blisters' new shed. Everyone is happy to see Mike again, and the Small Controller cheerily sets them all to work, as it doesn't do itself. Mike is also happy to be back with his "family".
