One for the Toad is the tenth and finale episode of Season 2 of Thomas: The Trainz Adventures and the twentieth episode overall.
Plot[]
There is a lot of different kinds of rolling stock on the Island of Sodor, one of them being brake vans. They’re a specially designed truck coupled to the back of the trains in order to help engines brake in emergency situations. Engines coming from the Mainland usually shunt their brake vans into the yards where they wait until their return trip.
Toad was waiting in the yards one day, for his next train. It had already been hours since Oliver left with his passenger train. Toad tries to pass the time with games, but quickly gets bored of even that. Just then, Murdoch shunts a train in, with a purple brake van at the helm. She is shunted two sidings away from Toad. The two exchange pleasantries and Toad comments on her unique appearance. Lola, as she is named, explains that her ploughs help with track work in order to spread gravel. Rosie arrives and shunts Annie and Clarabel in. She takes Toad with her to help with her goods train. Toad tries to say goodbye to Lola, but she is preoccupied talking to Annie and Clarabel.
On the way, Rosie asks Toad what’s wrong. He explains that he wishes to be friends with Lola. Rosie assures him that they can be friends, but to give it more time and talk to Lola more when he can. As they wait by a signal and Samson passes by with a train, Toad thinks he could be more like Bradford, Samson’s brake van, in order to impress Lola.
Back in the yards, Toad tries to order some trucks to behave, but they laugh him off, also causing their brakes to finally go off. Toad tries to explain to Philip, who was shunting the trucks, that he was only trying to help. He is also disappointed to learn that Lola wasn’t even paying attention. When Percy arrives to pick up the mail train, Toad asks to come with him, which Percy accepts.
Percy and Toad return to the yards the next day, and Toad is excited to tell Lola about his experience. However, he doesn’t see her throughout the day. The day after, with Lola still nowhere to be seen, Toad thinks she has returned to the Mainland. However, it’s revealed that she was shunted into a siding further behind him, much to his relief. Before he can say anything more to her, Douglas arrives and couples Toad to his train to take to Arlesdale.
On their way, Douglas notices that Toad isn’t being cheery and asks if he’s ok, which Toad assures him is. Unbeknown to them, the trucks plan to break away as retaliation for Toad stopping them earlier. Upon going up a hill, they last part of the train breaks away. Toad applies his brakes as the runaway enters Arlesburgh. Gilbert notices and quickly warns Duck, who is entering the town with a passenger train. Duck slows down just before a siding, and Gilbert’s driver rushes to change the points. Toad and the runaway is diverted into the siding and land in the water. Gilbert, Duck and Oliver praise him for stopping the runaway and the latter fetches Judy and Jerome to help Toad.
Once returned to the yards, Toad meets Lola again, who shares the engines’ sentiment about his runaway. Murdoch arrives with a return train to the Mainland, and Lola and Toad say their goodbyes for now. Toad is however pleased to have made another friend.
In a post-credits scene, Splatter and Dodge arrive at a factory facility to meet with Diesel 10. Splatter informs him that the plan has been successful so far and that Diesel has found some “recruits”. Diesel 10 is satisfied and ends by saying that “this is going to be fun”.
