Henry the Private Engine is the second episode of Season 3 of Thomas: The Trainz Adventures and the twenty-second episode overall.
Plot[]
One summer, Spencer arrives on Sodor, again due to transport the Duke and Duchess of Boxford around. He passes Gordon on the way to Knapford, and once they’re both there, agree to race each other. However, while the race is underway, Gordon is notified of unbalanced tracks ahead, which he smartly slows down for, while Spencer ignores his warning and ends up derailing. As a result, he is sent to the Steamsworks, where Victor tells the Duke that Spencer will at best be mended in a few weeks.
That night, the Fat Controller arrives at the sheds, seeking to find a temporary replacement for Spencer. He dismisses Gordon, as he was the indirect cause for Spencer’s accident, and instead settles on Henry, who accepts. Gordon however, tells him that he must match Spencer in order to please the Duke and Duchess. Edward reassures Henry to just be himself. While the others are sleeping, Henry begins to doubt himself, being reminded of Gordon’s words.
As he begins his job as the Duke and Duchess’ private engine, Henry decides to try and match Spencer’s speed, but the Duke asks him to slow down. Henry eventually arrives at Ulfstead Castle, where the Duke and Duchess are to see the Earl of Sodor. After dropping them off, Henry sees Glynn struggling with some trucks and decides to help him, in order to prove to the Duke and Duchess that he is strong. However, his bump into Glynn proves too strong and he bumps into some buffers and sends the trucks’ content flying and lands all over Stephen. The Earl, Duke and Duchess arrive to see to the commotion, and Henry apologises.
While in the private shed that night, Henry has a nightmare of the Fat Controller considering to send him away, before he’s abruptly awoken by the Duke. He informs Henry that he will be taking them to Knapford to meet the Fat Controller tomorrow. Henry initially declines to do so, citing the havoc he has caused. The Duke explains that they chose him because he was reliable, and nothing like Spencer, which cheers Henry up.
The next day, Henry takes them to Knapford at his own pace, to high praise from the pair upon the arrival at Knapford. The Fat Controller also praises him. Gordon rolls up alongside Henry and asks how it has been so far. Henry tells him that it has been ok.
