Toby the Brake Van is the fifth episode of Season 1 of Thomas: The Trainz Adventures.
Plot[]
One hot day, Toby is tasked by the Fat Controller to assist James in clearing up the yards at the big station, which is in a mess of trucks and coaches. James, who is not fond of smaller engines, thinks the situation is beneath him and even expresses so against Toby. Despite this, the two manage to assign different responsibilities in handling the trucks in the yard.
Eventually the yard is cleared and Toby shunts one final line of trucks before refilling with water. Just as he does, James backs down on the same train, having been cleared to take it. Accidentally, Toby is also coupled up to the train and James speeds of before anyone can decouple Toby. James speeds through stations and tunnels before eventually reaching Vicarstown. Thinking people would be impressed by him being splendid, he is annoyed when the plan backfires as people rather look to Toby and praises his actions as a "brake-van".
Back at the sheds, James expresses his disbelief. Toby reminds him that maybe the passengers wanted to see him because he is a kind and generous engine compared to James being boastful and rude. The Fat Controller expresses his agreement as he arrives. He praises Toby for his work in the yards and rewards him with a new coat of paint. James on the other hand, is reprimanded and asked to work in the quarry until further notice.
In a post-credits scene, Trevor is seen looking out over the edge towards a field.

- When Toby and James arrive at Vicarstown, A GNR N2 Tank Engine pulls into the Other Platform, This is a reference to Ryan. As this episode came out before Sodor's Legend of the Lost Treasure and there were no models of him available at the time.
