Escape is the second episode of Season 1 of Thomas: The Trainz Adventures. It was remastered in 2023 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the series.

Plot[]

2013 version[]

As a result of the busy work straining the engines during the summer, the Fat Controller sends Edward to the works to be mended, much to the other engines' displeasure.

At the works, he meets Oliver, who has recently arrived on Sodor. Edward asks him about how he got to Sodor, which he accepts to explain.

Oliver's old line had gradually been dieselised, but he never really believed it until his old manager announced his retirement. His successor expressed skepticism against him and would later put him away from active service. As his retirement became obvious, his crew finds a map of Sodor, and decides to bring him and autocoach Isabel to the island.

Not long after departing, they take a break at a station, only for Class 40 to discover them and bring them to a siding. There, the new manager arrives and announces that Oliver will be sent somewhere he "should have been long ago". After the diesel and the manager leaves, Oliver and his crew plan their second escape. A brake van, Toad, who's in a siding nearby, asks if he can join them, which they accept and swiftly couple up to him.

As they near Sodor, Oliver runs out of coal in the middle of the line. Nearby, they hear a Scottish engine starting their return to Sodor as well. Oliver manages to stop him and asks if he can take them to Sodor. The engine accepts, and the crews give Oliver, Isabel and Toad a makeover before departing.

The entourage is stopped by a signal man, who inspects the trio before allowing them to continue on to Sodor.

By the time they arrive on Sodor, the sun has risen and Douglas shunts Oliver to the works. The Fat Controller then arrives to inspect him and asks if he wants to be a part of his railway, which Oliver gladly accepts.

In the present, Oliver concludes his story just as a workman arrives to inform him that he is ready for his test run. His crew starts him up and he feels happier for the first time in months. Edward also felt very happy for him.

Oliver meant well, but he still had troubles doubting himself. But that's another story.

2023 version[]

As a result of the busy work straining the engines during the summer, the Fat Controller sends Edward to the works to be mended, much to the other engines' displeasure. James, Gordon and Henry in particular express their disdain, which Percy teases them for, while Thomas assures Edward that they will manage in his absence.

At the works, he meets Oliver, who has recently arrived on Sodor. The two reminisce about the days they worked together on a new station when Edward was a part of the Furness Railway. He then asks Oliver about how he got to Sodor, which he accepts to explain.

Oliver's old line had gradually been dieselised, but he never really believed it until his old manager announced his retirement. His successor expressed his disdain against steam engines and would later put him away from active service, ready to be scrapped. As his fate became obvious, his crew found a map of Sodor, and decided to bring him and autocoach Isabel to the island.

Not long after departing, they took a break in a siding with a shed, only for Class 40 to discover them and bring them back to the old line. There, the new manager arrived and taunted him for his attempt to escape. After the diesel and the manager leave, Oliver's crew disembark from hiding on board Isabel and start him again for their second escape. A brake van, Toad, who's in a siding nearby, asked if he can join them since he is also scheduled to be melted down; which they accept and swiftly couple up to him.

As they near an industrial area, Oliver runs out of coal in the middle of the line. A diesel arrives and hesitates before he recognises Oliver and puts him into a scrap siding. His crew is also arrested by the police after the diesel notifies a signalman. Oliver apologizes to Isabel and Toad, who are sympathetic. Time goes by without any hope of rescue, but one night, Oliver overhears a Scottish engine starting their return to Sodor. Oliver manages to stop him and ask if he can take them to Sodor. The engine accepted, and the crews gave Oliver, Isabel and Toad a make-over before departing.

The entourage was stopped by a signal man, who inspected the trio before allowing them to continue on to Sodor.

His crew starts him up and head out onto the main line.

Oliver meant well, but he still had troubles doubting himself. But that's another story.
