Plot[]

During the summer, work has become a lot and the weather is giving the engines a bother. The Fat Controller speaks to the engines at the sheds and gives out assignments, with Thomas to take a train to the Mainland and Percy to substitute on his branch line.

Duck delivers some tankers to Vicarstown, and is spooked by Diesel when he’s filling up on water. Rosie arrives and fends him off and talks to Duck about his and Diesel’s history before she leaves to help Bear sort out his train. Diesel returns to work and speaks to Splatter and Dodge about Diesel 10’s plan and that he wants to meet him. Diesel reluctantly agrees.

Thomas arrives in the yards as Stanley, Charlie and Stafford put together the last trucks of his train. However, Thomas is surprised to learn that explosives, a fuel tank and a gunpowder truck are on the same train. Charlie assures that they haven’t done anything but put together the trucks that were ordered. Philip chimes in with there being cheese on the train, which calms Thomas a bit before he departs.

Diesel is revealed to have been assigned to work with George to flatten a piece of tracks for Henry to derail over. Diesel grows frustrated with how much time George is using and decides to return to Vicarstown. Shortly after he leaves, George finishes to flatten the track just as Henry arrives right around the corner. Oblivious to the damage, he travels over it and derails. His fireman finds it unusual for the track to be flattened, a suspicion Henry shares.

At Crovan’s Gate, the stationmaster asks Edward to fetch Rocky in order to rescue Henry, which he accepts, while another engine will be tasked to take his passengers in the meantime.

Thomas drops of his train at Bridlington goods yard and heads back to Sodor. He is flagged down at Vicarstown station, and the stationmaster informs him that the line is being cleared after Henry’s accident and tells him to stay at the Vicarstown sheds for the night. At the sheds he finds Rosie, and the two briefly talk about Henry’s accident before Thomas asks about Diesel’s whereabouts. Rosie is uncertain of it, but notes that he said he had something else to sort out before he left. Thomas assures that he might be back by morning and the two go to sleep.

As the quiet night settles in, the silence is interrupted by a sudden explosion at Vicarstown station. Percy comes racing to the sheds with the mail train, also awakening Thomas and Rosie. Panicked, Percy explains what happened as he came into the station. He asserts that they need to inform the Rescue Centre and the police. The three head over to the station to check for survivors. As Flynn and fire fighters fan the flames, with the help of locals, Thomas notices that the viaduct has collapsed, exposing the ground bellow. Rosie warns that the bridge might be unstable and recommends that they back off, which they subsequently do.

As the Sodor News report on the explosion, the Fat Controller arrives on scene and talks to the fire fighters. They reveal that train wheels have been discovered among the debris, and concludes that it was a railway accident. Another fire fighter arrives and informs him that there’s something he should see. Said discovery is revealed to be a vent van, which the Fat Controller finds hard to believe could have been on the tram way, since they don’t have any rolling stock and either were any of them out at the time of the explosion. One reason being also that the vent vans would not be able to make it around the tram way turns. The lead fire fighter questions if there’s any other way the van made onto the tramway. The Fat Controller is uncertain but turns towards an adjacent building and spot a security camera, which he notes is a way for them to find out.

The next day, the police question Percy about the explosion, and he recounts it identically to what he told Thomas and Rosie the night it all happened. Later, the Fat Controller, along with the police and fire department view the security footage. Though the police initially dismiss it, the Fat Controller argues that the footage proves that a fuel tanker was involved in addition to the van, and that they derailed in the tight corner. The stationmaster suggests that they look for the running number on the van. Back on the scene, some firefighters discover half of the number burned of, but the numbers readable prove sufficient. The Fat Controller also orders the line to continue operations when the authorities give clearance to do so.

At the Steelworks, Diesel informs Diesel 10 that George’s mission was a success. Soon after, he leaves and returns to Vicarstown. Splatter and Dodge then arrive and equally so report the success of the Vicarstown explosion. When asked if the investigation has figured it out yet, Dodge explains that they found the running number. Splatter on the hand reassures Diesel 10 that they took the trucks before any records could be made and that everything is under control. Once they’ve gone, Theodore Osborn reveals himself, and that Diesel 10 broke him out of prison. He assures him that there will be plenty of scrap to be taken care of once their plan is complete.

Back at the sheds, the Fat Controller reveals that the running number was traced back to Thomas’ train. Thomas distances himself from blame, while he and Percy defend themselves and Rosie. The Fat Controller assures that he will check with the yard manager once he returns to Knapford.

Diesel begins to spread rumours and accusations about Thomas being behind the Vicarstown explosion, though not everyone believes him.

The Fat Controller returns to the sheds and informs the three engines that the yard manager at Bridlington claims that Thomas never delivered his train, which Thomas argues against. The Fat Controller tells him that he wants to believe him, but there are too many signs that point to him. Being fed off by the accusations of him having caused the Vicarstown explosion, Thomas heads to the Mainland with Percy.

Back on Sodor, the Fat Controller begins to assign new task to the engines. With Henry out of action, he asks a lighter engine to take the express, his choice being Bear. Just as he calls on Thomas and Percy, he and the other engines realise that they’ve gone. Some of engines inform him that they haven’t seen either of the two since the morning. He asks Edward and Oliver to join him in looking for Thomas. They meet Rosie, who explains that Thomas and Percy went to the Mainland.

On the Mainland, Thomas and Percy are ambushed by three diesels who start to pursue them. They sneak into a siding as the diesels oil past. There they meet Merlin, who Thomas introduces Percy to and likewise in return. Merlin explains that how Diesel 10 took over the Steelworks and that he and the other engines working there escaped.

At the steelworks, George is frustrated of now becoming a part of a larger plan to take over the railway. Diesel 10 assures him that if he agrees to the plan, he could flatten any rails he wants, and maybe even get his own roller rink over the sheds. Diesel arrives and informs them that the Fat Controller has left Sodor. Osborn takes the opportunity and says that they should go there and take over the railway. Shortly afterwards, the cavalcade heads to Sodor.

Once they arrive at Vicarstown, Diesel 10 assigns Splatter and Dodge to be the lookouts while Osborn sets his sights on finding Oliver. Diesel informs him that he went to the Mainland to find Thomas, much to Osborn’s dismay. Diesel 10 persuades him to focus on the railway before finding Oliver, and assigns Arry and Bert to find more engines to help them. In reality the two are uncertain about their orders as they head back to the Mainland and pass Thomas and Percy’s hideout. Bear passes by with the express and stops when he thinks he sees Thomas. He reverses back and talks to them, with Thomas explaining what has happened. Bear explains that the Fat Controller went looking for him with Edward and Oliver, leaving the island without anyone in charge. He then suggests that he could find out more about Diesel 10s plan and offers to spy on him and his gang, which Thomas and Percy accepts. Although Merlin is hesitant to trust Bear, they both assure him that Bear is trustworthy. Before crossing over to Sodor, Bear tackles Splatter and Dodge at the rolling bridge before continuing on to Knapford.

Meanwhile, Osborn struggles to get information about Oliver’s whereabouts from Sidney. Bear shunts the express and starts to ask what’s the matter. Osborn asserts that he’s looking for Oliver, and Bear tells him that he is on the Mainland, but doesn’t know when he will be back. Dodge arrives and informs Osborn that his “visitors” have arrived. He then asks Bear to take him to the station, which he accepts. Bear arrives at Vicarstown station, where the “visitors” are revealed to be Carl, D261 and D199. Osborn tasks them with finding Oliver and bring him to him to be scrapped once and for all. Once they’ve left, Diesel 10 asks Bear what he’s doing. Bear explains that if he hears of a worthy cause, he’s willing to jump onboard. Osborn assures Diesel 10 that Bear can be trusted and tasks him with making sure that George isn’t doing something “idiotic”.

On the way to Knapford, Bear asks Osborn about his plan. He recounts how he many years ago “reclaimed” Oliver, but the Fat Controller wouldn’t cooperate, and as a result he was arrested and imprisoned. He had thought long about how to get back at him, until Diesel 10 broke him out of prison. They hatched a plan based on common motives against the railway. Osborn also explains that he was responsible for all the “incidents” around the railway, which were used as means to portray the railway as unsafe. He also explains that Diesel 10 persuaded Diesel to join their plan and he recruited a few friends for the cause, under the impression that they were going to fulfil their revenges. Osborn laughs at the prospect of the railway, now without a controller, will be his and that Thomas will be taken care of in due course.

After dropping Osborn off at Knapford, Bear speaks to Duck there and informs him of his plan and asks him to inform the other steam engines about Diesel 10 and Osborn’s plan.

Duck rushes to the sheds where he informs Gordon, James and Emily about the situation. They put the pieces together: Diesel spreading the rumours was to shift the blame away from Osborn. Gordon notes that he spotted George lurking around the turntable earlier. Duck warns that they should be careful with what they say, and sets out to tell the Harwick crew.

At Bridlington goods yard, the Fat Controller asks a steam engine if he has seen Thomas and Percy. The engine confirms that he has seen Thomas and that he dropped of a train the other day. Baffled, the Fat Controller realises that Thomas was telling the truth all along. He returns to Edward, and summarises that he hasn’t had luck in finding Thomas. Just then, D261 stops by and claims to have seen Thomas and asks them to follow him. As Edward begins to recognise him, Oliver warns him just as D199 bumps into him from behind. Carl orders D261 and D199 to bring them along, and they leave just as the two engines’ crews return. Unbeknown to all of them, Jinty was witness to all of it and puffs away worried.

Bear approaches Vicarstown on his way to the Mainland to inform Thomas and Percy, but is halted at the station by Diesel 10, who questions where he’s going. Bear explains that he’s going to collect something important for Osborn and will be back soon. After he leaves, Diesel 10 asks Splatter to follow Bear, as he feels like something doesn’t seem right. Bear returns to the hideout and tells Thomas, Percy and Merlin about Diesel 10 and Osborn’s plan to take over the railway. Shortly after having told them, Diesel 10 arrives with Splatter and Dodge. Bear asks the three to leave while he holds them off, but he’s only able to block Diesel 10s path, allowing Splatter and Dodge to pursue the trio.

As the chase ensues, the diesel engines who ambushed Thomas Percy earlier join the pursuit. The trio arrive at the canal, where Thomas asks Beresford to help them. He does so by lifting some pipes and throws them onto to the ambush diesels, causing them to derail. The trio arrives at an abandoned yard with limited options at their disposal. Thomas sees the opportunity to the use Merlin’s invisibility to get away, which they do, leaving a confused Splatter and Dodge behind.

Diesel 10 brings Bear back to Sodor and traps him into a yard siding and tries to pry information out of him, but he refuses. Osborn later arrives and gives Bear a piece of his mind before stepping on board Diesel 10, informing him that Oliver and the Fat Controller have been captured. Bear is shocked by the news, a reaction that triggers Diesel 10 into pushing him off the rails. The derailment is severe enough to cause Bear’s engine to splutter and eventually stops.

Having escaped from Splatter and Dodge, Thomas, Percy and Merlin arrive at a used goods yard and stop to consider a plan. Both of them support him to do what’s necessary to stop Osborn’s plan. Just then, another voice expresses agreement, revealed to be Spencer, followed by other Mainland engines, including Flying Scotsman, Stepney, Caitlin, Connor and Jinty. Stepney explains that even though Sodor isn’t their primary home, it’s still a home to them all.

Thomas, Percy and the Mainland steam engines return to Sodor. They stop by Bear’s crash scene, who explains how Diesel 10 and Osborn now have Edward, Oliver and the Fat Controller, and that they’re headed to Tidmouth. Rosie, who arrived to help Bear, decides to join their ranks. Thomas assigns Flying Scotsman, Caitlin and Connor to keep guard at Bear’s crash scene and orders the remaining engines to join him. They proceed to the sheds, where Diesel 10, Osborn, D199, D261, Carl and Diesel hold Edward, Gordon, James, Emily and Oliver hostage. After a failed ceasefire, Osborn orders Diesel to push Oliver forward to be scrapped, but he hesitates, reconsidering his participation in the plan. He then announces that he will no longer go through with Diesel 10 and Osborn’s plan and says that they’re out of their minds. He then urges Oliver to flee, following closely behind. Osborn then orders Diesel 10 to go after them, and Thomas turns around on the turntable just after they leave.

Oliver and Diesel thunder down the line with Thomas and Diesel 10 close behind. When he comes up beside him, Thomas slows down and Diesel 10 instead derails Diesel with Pinchy. Diesel encourages Thomas and Oliver to continue. As they pass by Bear’s crash scene, Flying Scotsman puts some flatbeds of pipes in Diesel 10s path, but he ploughs straight through them. As they near the rolling bridge, Oliver eventually runs out of water and Thomas keeps him going by pushing him. The two eventually pass over the rolling bridge where they both run out of water. Diesel 10 comes up besides them and is about to wreck Oliver with his claw when Frankie, Lexi, Theo and Hurricane push some flatbeds against Diesel 10 and derail him. Frankie, being fed up by Diesel 10s complaining, push the flatbeds one more time and submerge him in the river, electrocuting him, causing him to have a memory loss. Osborn is sent into the river and is sucked away by the stream. The Fat Controller is also revealed to be ok, much to the engines’ relief. He remains determined and declares that they still have a railway to run and damages to repair.

Harold finds Diesel, while Thomas and Percy return to his aid with Rocky. The Fat Controller has a stern word with him about his alliance with Diesel 10 and Osborn. Diesel sorrowfully admits that he was responsible for the Christmas accident that Gordon and Henry was involved in. He explains that he had damaged the tracks originally, but it was nothing serious and didn’t give it a second thought. He also theorises that Donald’s plough must have damaged it enough to later cause Gordon and Henry’s derailment. He also recalls that he went to Diesel 10 for help to push away the blame, and Osborn helped with deleting the security footage from the day Diesel was on said rails, and he was later blackmailed into working with them. The Fat Controller praises his actions in saving Oliver, and asks him to work at the waste dump as punishment, but assures him that he will be fixed before he returns to work.

As Thomas and Merlin assist with the rebuilding of the railway, Merlin asks him about what happened to both Diesel 10 and Osborn. Thomas explains that the former was sent to work at the ironworks and the latter is still in the wind.

In a post credits scene, the police search along the river for Osborn, but can’t find him. They do express hope that he may be stranded if he can’t be found. Osborn however, is revealed to have returned to the Mainland, where he is picked up by Beresford, who quickly recognises him from wanted posters; but Osborn manages to escape onto Hiro’s passing train.

In another post credits scene, we see Logan reversing into view, clearing his throat and takes a breath before the screen cuts to black.
